Ingredients

For the patties
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
For the gravy
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch (optional for thickening)
  • 2 tbsp cooking oil

Method

Preparation
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Form the mixture into oval patties.
Cooking
  1. Heat cooking oil in a skillet over medium heat and brown the patties on both sides.
  2. Remove the patties and keep them warm.
  3. In the same skillet, add beef broth, scraping up any browned bits.
  4. If desired, mix cornstarch with a little cold water and stir it into the broth to thicken it.
  5. Return the patties to the skillet, cover, and simmer for about 15 minutes until cooked through.
Serving
  1. Serve the Salisbury steak topped with the gravy.

Notes

For extra flavor, try adding some chopped herbs like parsley or thyme to the meat mixture. Make sure not to overcrowd the skillet when browning the patties; this helps them cook evenly. If you like a thicker gravy, increase the cornstarch a little more, adjusting to your preferred consistency.
