Ingredients

Cake
  • 1 box Boxed cake mix (e.g., yellow, vanilla, or chocolate)
  • 3 large Eggs
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1/2 cup Vegetable oil
Frosting
  • 1/2 cup Butter (1 stick), softened
  • 2 cups Powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 2-3 tablespoons Milk
Coating & Decoration
  • 12 ounces Candy melts (white or chocolate)
  • 24 Lollipop sticks
  • Sprinkles (optional), as desired

Equipment

  • Baking pan
  • Large mixing bowls
  • Hand mixer or stand mixer
  • Parchment paper
  • Lollipop sticks
  • Microwave-safe bowl or double boiler
  • Styrofoam block (optional)

Method

Make the Cake
  1. Prepare and bake the cake mix according to the package instructions, then allow the cake to cool completely.
Form Cake Pops
  1. Crumble the cooled cake into fine crumbs in a large bowl, then mix in the softened frosting until the mixture is uniformly moist and can be easily rolled.
  2. Roll the cake mixture into small, uniform balls (about 1.5 inches in diameter) and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, then chill them thoroughly in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
Dip and Decorate
  1. Melt the candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl or using a double boiler, stirring until smooth.
  2. Dip the tip of each lollipop stick into the melted candy, then insert it about halfway into a chilled cake ball and return them to the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes to secure the sticks.
  3. Dip each cake pop into the melted candy, ensuring it's fully coated, gently tap off excess, and immediately add sprinkles if desired before the coating sets.
  4. Place the finished cake pops in a styrofoam block or similar holder to dry completely at room temperature, which will take about 15-30 minutes.

Notes

Ensure the cake is completely cooled before crumbling to achieve the best texture. Chilling the cake balls thoroughly at each step is crucial for easy dipping and preventing them from falling apart. Work quickly when dipping in melted candy melts, and reheat the candy as needed to maintain a smooth consistency.
