Preparation
- Brown the ground breakfast sausage in a large skillet over medium heat, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain any excess grease and set aside.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, black pepper, and dry mustard until well combined.
- Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
- Layer the bottom of the prepared baking dish with the cubed bread, then sprinkle the cooked sausage evenly over the bread.
- Top the sausage with the shredded cheddar cheese, distributing it evenly.
- Carefully pour the egg mixture over the layers in the baking dish, ensuring all the bread is moistened.
- Cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 8 hours, or preferably overnight.
- The next morning, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Remove the casserole from the refrigerator and uncover.
- Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the casserole is set and golden brown on top.
- Let the casserole rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
For extra flavor, add a pinch of red pepper flakes with the sausage. You can also customize with your favorite vegetables like bell peppers or spinach. Ensure the casserole rests for a few minutes after baking before serving.
