  • 1 loaf loaf of French bread Use day-old bread for better texture.
  • 6 large large eggs
  • 2 cups half-and-half
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • to taste Sugar for caramelizing For crispy topping.
  • to taste Maple syrup for serving For drizzling.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Cut the French bread into thick slices and arrange them in a greased baking dish.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, half-and-half, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt.
  3. Pour the egg mixture over the bread slices, ensuring they are well soaked.
  4. Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
Baking
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the plastic wrap from the baking dish.
  2. Bake for 40-45 minutes, until the top is golden and fluffy.
  3. Let it cool slightly, then sprinkle sugar on top and use a kitchen torch to caramelize the sugar until crispy.
  4. Serve warm, drizzled with maple syrup.

Notes

If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat before serving, redoing the caramelized topping for crispiness. Try adding orange zest for a citrusy flavor or use brioche bread for a richer taste.
