Old-Fashioned Spicy Gingerbread

Ingredients
  

  • cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter softened
  • ¾ cup brown sugar packed
  • ½ cup molasses
  • 1 large egg

Method
 

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a baking pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the molasses and egg, mixing until well combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing just until combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top evenly.
  7. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the gingerbread to cool before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Serve plain or dusted with powdered sugar.
  • Delicious with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days, or freeze for longer storage.
