Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Unroll one sheet of puff pastry onto the prepared baking sheet.
- Evenly spread the basil pesto over the puff pastry, leaving a small border.
- Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over the pesto.
- Carefully place the second sheet of puff pastry on top, aligning the edges.
Assembly
- Using a sharp knife, cut the layered pastry into the shape of a Christmas tree with a trunk at the bottom.
- From the central "trunk" of the tree, cut horizontal strips on both sides, leaving the center intact.
- Twist each strip a few times to create "branches" for your tree.
- If desired, beat the egg and brush it lightly over the entire pastry tree for a golden finish.
Baking
- Bake for 18-22 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed, golden brown, and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
Serve warm for the best flavor and texture. You can customize this recipe by adding a sprinkle of red pepper flakes for a kick or using different types of cheese.
