Preparation
- Peel and slice the onions thinly using a sharp knife or mandoline.
- Melt butter in a large skillet or pot over medium heat.
- Add the sliced onions to the skillet and sauté for 5-7 minutes until they begin to soften and become translucent.
- Stir in the granulated sugar, salt, and black pepper, cooking for another 2 minutes until the sugar dissolves and lightly caramelizes the onions.
- Pour in the broth, bring to a gentle simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 10-15 minutes until the onions are very tender.
- Remove the lid, increase heat slightly, and cook uncovered for a few more minutes to reduce any excess liquid if desired.
- Garnish with fresh chopped parsley, if using, and serve warm as a comforting side dish.
