Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 4 large Onions, sweet or yellow
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon Granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 1/2 cup Chicken or vegetable broth
  • Fresh parsley chopped, for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Cutting board
  • Sharp knife
  • Large skillet or pot with lid
  • Wooden spoon or spatula

Method

Preparation
  1. Peel and slice the onions thinly using a sharp knife or mandoline.
  2. Melt butter in a large skillet or pot over medium heat.
  3. Add the sliced onions to the skillet and sauté for 5-7 minutes until they begin to soften and become translucent.
  4. Stir in the granulated sugar, salt, and black pepper, cooking for another 2 minutes until the sugar dissolves and lightly caramelizes the onions.
  5. Pour in the broth, bring to a gentle simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 10-15 minutes until the onions are very tender.
  6. Remove the lid, increase heat slightly, and cook uncovered for a few more minutes to reduce any excess liquid if desired.
  7. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley, if using, and serve warm as a comforting side dish.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider using sweet onions like Vidalia. Adjust sweetness and seasoning to your preference.
