- Combine cocoa powder, sugar, and salt in a saucepan. Gradually whisk in a small amount of milk to create a smooth paste, then add the remaining milk.
- Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until it's hot and steaming but not boiling.
- Remove from heat and stir in the semi-sweet chocolate chips until completely melted and smooth. Add the vanilla extract and stir again.
- Pour the hot chocolate into mugs and serve immediately, topped with whipped cream, mini marshmallows, and chocolate shavings, if desired.
Notes
For an extra rich flavor, use a mix of milk chocolate and dark chocolate chips. A pinch of cayenne pepper can add a subtle kick.
