Preparation
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large skillet, brown ground beef and diced onion over medium heat until no pink remains, then drain any excess grease.
- Stir in chili seasoning, diced tomatoes, drained kidney beans, and tomato sauce. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
- Pour the chili mixture into a 9x13 inch baking dish, spreading it evenly. Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer over the chili.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the tater tots are golden brown and crispy.
- Remove the casserole from the oven and sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top. Return to the oven and bake for another 5-10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Let the casserole stand for a few minutes before serving to allow it to set.
Notes
For a spicier kick, add diced jalapeños to the chili mixture. Garnish with sour cream, green onions, or extra cheese before serving.
